This is a new name for Fontell's taxon, recognized at the level of species within Cymbeopleura. Bahls (2019) cites homotypic synonyms as Cymbella angustata var. linearis (Fontell) R.Ross 1947 and Cymbopleura incertiformis var. linearis (Fontell) Krammer 2003. Bahls also cites as a heteroptypic synonym Encyonopsis vasiljevae Potatpova et al. 2014.
