Additional information Presently known from tropical and subtropical East Asia and from Victoria, Australia. It is difficult to identify and can be expected to be much more widely distributed, at least in warmer waters. [details]

Harmful effect Production of domoic avid has been confirmed by several methods (Kotaki et al 2000, 2005, 2006, Tan et al 2016).
* N. navis-varingica produces domoic acid in amounts similar to highly toxic Pseudo-nitzschia species. * It produces both domoic acid (DA) and the derivatives isodomoic acid A (IA) and B (IB).
